Places and people of interest in the village
We are fortunate in that Chez Teresa is located in Fontevraud l’abbaye as on our doorstep not only do we have as our immediate neighbour, the magnificent Abbaye Royale, but also many other cultural gems. For example we have some wonderful artists studios nearby and also a few useful shops and artisan’s boutiques to visit including the gifted tapissier, Michel Thibault. In addition there are two boulangerie, a language school, two hotels, two bars, a pharmacie, a good hair salon viz Dominique, and several places to eat out to suit all pockets and a range of tastes. There are lots of wonderful scenic places to visit from the ancient forest to the Lavoir des Roches and La fontaine St Maimboeuf where historically clothes would have been washed at the former and the main source for water located at the latter.
Just up the road from Chez Teresa is the local Mairee/Town Hall which is situated in the main square. Here you will find an ATM/cash dispenser and a defibrillator (hopefully you will not experience any heart problems whilst you are here, but if you run out of funds you might – so just in case…..)

La Tapissier, Michel Thibault
Along Allee Sainte-Catherine, just past the church of St. Michel, is the local tapissier/upholsterer/curtain maker, Michel Thibault. With over 35 years experience in the trade, Michel is extremely gifted at what he does. No job is too small or too big for him and he is as happy creating curtains for local Chateaux as he is for upholstering chairs for local people. At Chez Teresa we are always on the look out for beautiful antique chairs and sometimes my finds are rather worse for wear, so of late we have called upon Michel to upholster two of our chairs (see pics). The studio is run by Michel’s charming wife Michele and in situ are many fabulous fabrics for sale to suit a range of budgets.
e: Les Douceurs du Terroir
Located in the main square, highlights are their delicious meringues and a selection of hand made biscuits. Here you will find cookies and macaroons hand-made using with the finest of local produce. Chocolate cookies, shortbread pure butter and caramel, crackers with sea salt (perfect for those essential appetizers), crisps, and also a selection of teas, coffees, wines and jams. Based on ancient recipes their cookies and macaroons are original creations from soft macaroons with almond cream, to Angevin cakes and lemon shortbread cookies to cardamom biscuits favoured by the Plantagenet Kings and Queens of yesteryear.
Open all year, every day from 10h to 19h (except between October to May they are closed on Monday’s).

Richard Leray: An Illuminated Man * see article below
Richard Leray has a remarkable talent. At his open studio Festina Lente along St. Catherine’s Alley, just past the church at the heart of the village he creates fabulous illuminated manuscripts based on Medieval texts. Employing ancient, traditional methods he uses the finest of paints including real gold to embellish his works. Richard also creates large modern canvases which he calls space poetry.
